Before a rocking crowd at Heavenly Farms, dominated by Hussaini FC supporters, Hussaini FC held off a late Timeless Creations FC comeback attempt, winning 3-2 and securing the first NJSSL soccer championship.
Hussaini FC drew first blood midway through the first half, courtesy of a goal by MVP candidate Samir Ahmad. The Hussaini FC lead doubled not far after that, when assist-leader Farhan Ahsan delivered a perfect cross to Mehdi Jaffery, who headed home a goal that many call the best play of the season. It was at this point many thought that a NJSSL Final would result in yet another blowout, as back to back basketball finals have been underwhelming. However, Timeless Creations FC captain Qassim Hussain had different plans, having capitalized on a slick pass and navigating Yasir Rizvi and Shahrukh Naqvi before slotting the ball past Adi Shah into the bottom left corner to give Timeless Creations FC some much needed momentum, entering half-time down 2-1.
The second half saw Timeless Creations FC pushing for an equalizer, having had several chances. The most notable came off a corner kick by Ali Zaman Razak to #1 overall pick and Defensive Player of the Year candidate Ali Abbas Karim, narrowly missing a header wide right. Immediately on the counter, it was Samir Ahmad yet again, striking for his second goal of the match, restoring a two-goal cushion for Hussaini FC. The drama continued when a slide tackle by HFC's Yasir Rizvi on Ali Zaman Razak resulted in a red card for Yasir and a penalty kick for Razak, in which he capitalized to narrow the lead to 3-2.
Despite a late push by Timeless Creations FC, including some questioning from fans regarding their tactical decisions in the final few minutes, Hussaini FC held on to secure the win. In the post game, questions were asked about why Ali Abbas Karim was not positioned further upfield during the comeback attempt and the team seemingly playing conservatively in the final minutes. Captain Qassim Hussain of Timeless Creations FC stated, "Hussaini was the better team today, they deserved to win."
Hussaini FC captain Zain Jaffery, celebrating his first ring in two years and third overall (2 basketball, 1 soccer). addressed the pre-season doubters who questioned the team for assembling talent more geared towards basketball, highlighting the team's chemistry and resilience. It is worthy to note that Timeless Creations FC was down one of their top players in Abbas Haider.
Playoff MVP Samir Ahmad echoed ZJ's sentiment, and mentioned that the true win is the brotherhood that NJSSL aims to forge every season. This win marks Farhan Ahsan's first championship, having suffered some heartbreaking finals losses in football and basketball. His dad, Shoja Ahsan, owner of Timeless Creations stated, "I was rooting for Timeless Creations to win and was rooting for Farhan individually."
Congratulations to Hussaini FC and ownership Mesum Abbas Naqvi!
