3G Capital 55, Verstolo 42
Apparently, someone forgot their glass slipper at Chelsea Piers a few weeks ago. Either that or 3G Capital didn't get the memo that play-in teams aren't supposed to get to championship games.
3G, led by captain Prince Charming Jonathan Granowitz, already became the first team in RBA history to win back-to-back games in the playoffs. This past week, they extended their Blu-ray rental of Cinderella, defeating Verstolo 55-42.
Verstolo, playing without Justin Cutler, Sam Strickberger and Yoni Goldstein, ran a zone defense to preserve legs. But that opened up looks for 3G's Ethan Coy and Matthew Warshay, who scored 16 and 14 points, respectively, before the scoreboard hit midnight.
The game remained close throughout the first half, with both teams accusing the refs of being evil stepsisters. But with Aytan Goodman's wedding ball approaching, 3G knew they needed to speed things up quickly. Although Steven Leiser-Mitchell, 3G's leading scorer for the season, only scored two points, Ari Sarna was able to turn that pumpkin into a carriage, scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds.
Verstolo was paced by captain Joe Schnitzer (22 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals), but he was unable to overcome the fairy godmother that was the 3G bench. 3G forward Jeff Sohn was seen leaving the game early, which opposing fans Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo'd.
"I had a dream last night that we'd blow them out so I could get to the wedding early," said Sohn after the game. "I guess a dream is a wish your heart makes."
Glasenglitter 48, Brandgenuity 42
What if I told you Glasenglitter's highest scorer had 14 points (captain Jake Fischer), GA had zero points at halftime and MVP/ROY contender Zev Stravitz was in foul trouble all night and scored a season-low eight points? Sounds like a B-minus 30 for 30 promo.
But for Glasenglitter, it was just enough to get past Brandgenuity, thanks to some stifling defense and timely shots. It was a bit of a grudge match for the Glitters, as their lone loss this season came against Brandgenuity in Week 6.
"I'm always one to hold a grudge," said Fischer. "In third grade, Alex Goldstein put gum in my hair and I'm still waiting for the right time to get him back. Man, I hate that guy. Freakin' Alex Goldstein. He better sleep with one eye open. What a jerk. Sorry, what was your question?"
It was a back-and-forth battle, filled with ties and lead changes galore. The score was tied at halftime like 22-22 or something.
Simon Mendes led the way for Brandgenuity, scoring 14 points including three three-pointers. Yaniv Lusana added 10 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
With Glasenglitter up by two and 40 seconds remaining, 'Genuity guard Eli Grossman drove to the basket and dished the ball to Mendes who had an open three-point look in the corner, but Mendes' shot hit the back rim and bounced out. Glasenglitter got the rebound and pulled away with free throws.
"I heard the first recap was Cinderella-themed," said Grossman. "All we got was a weird quote about Alex Goldstein? I want a refund."
