Week 5 Game Recaps
DRG 54, Elite Pets 43
There are officially no winless teams remaining in RBA this season, as DRG notched its first victory of the season, defeating Elite Pets by 11.
“I’m finally off the schneid,” said an exhausted Yoshi Gadasi, DRG’s captain who was on the winless Accordion team a year ago. “And I’m never going to ride that schneid again.”
It felt like it was DRG’s game to lose right from the beginning, perhaps because the usual Scheff family fans were unable to join as spectators due to Chelsea Piers Fitness’ spectator policy.
“You’ve heard of the ‘Jordan Rules,’ right?” said Matt Scheff after the game. “Well these are the ‘Scheff Rules.’”
DRG pulled ahead in the second half thanks to a great game from rookie Nate Robinson, who scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Noah Sobel-Pressman added seven points and 12 rebounds and Emmett Stein led the way with 19 points.
For the Pets, rookie Noah Lee had a strong game, notching a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Pets fall to 2-3 and will play Sherwood next week, while DRG (1-4) will look for to start a winning streak as they play 3G Capital.
3G Capital 59, Brandgenuity 49
3G Capital led from the start in this game thanks to great ball movement and scoring coming from all places, as four players finished with double-digit points.
Despite being down, however, Brandgenuity, led by Simon Mendes (17 points, 7 rebounds, 5 threes) fought hard and went on a big run in the second half to bring the game to within a few buckets.
“That ‘menschen’ from the last game recap really fired me up,” said Mendes. “I do want people to know that I’m not that good of a guy though. For example, yesterday I threw out a banana peel instead of composting it.”
Ultimately, 3G Capital pulled out the win and is in the midst of a two-game winning streak. This was Brandgenuity’s first “real” loss, as their first loss came from a forfeit.
3G (2-3) plays DRG this week, while Brandgenuity will face a first-place Glasenglitter squad.
Fresh Prints 40, Sherwood Lumber 36
Scoring was tough to come by for both teams in this game, as Fresh Prints played without top guard Ben Azoulay, and Sherwood Lumber without top guard Jared Scheff. Sources said both players were seen playing 1-on-1 at the Chelsea Piers Field House at 6pm, apparently unaware the games had moved locations.
Sherwood led in the first half, thanks to David Shepard, who finished with a game-high 20 points. But the team struggled to score in the second half.
Fresh Prints, meanwhile, featured a double-double-double, as Max Geller (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Ari Holzhauer (18 points, 19 rebounds) both collected double-doubles. If anything I could say that this game was rare, but I thought, nah forget it, yo holmes to Chelsea Pier.
The game ultimately came down to the final two seconds where Holzhauer got the final rebound and put-back to seal the deal.
Prints (3-2) will face Verstolo this week, while Lumber (1-4) plays Elite Pets.
Glasenglitter 71, RDA 45
Within minutes of the opening tip, Glasenglitter got off to a double-digit lead and never looked back. ‘Glitter rookie Zev Stravitz finished with a game-high 27 points, one of four Glitter players to reach double figures.
“We rolled these guys we played tonight,” said an anonymous Glasenglitter player to RDA captain Elan Kane, unaware he was talking to RDA captain Elan Kane.
While the win keeps Glitter undefeated for the season and atop the RBA standings at 5-0, rumors have been swirling around captain Jake Fischer’s status with the team. Fischer even wrote about it in his latest Yahoo Sports article:
“Even with a 30-13 5-0 record, even with the second-ranked offense in the entire NBA RBA. The Bucks’ Glasenglitter’s porous defense and, more importantly, the confusion and disconnect among Milwaukee’s Glasenglitter’s players and staffers about the team’s schematic approach, league sources told Yahoo Sports, all presented too critical an obstacle for the Bucks Glasenglitter to overcome in such a crucial season with no goal other than reclaiming the RBA championship. Milwaukee won with Giannis Antetokounmpo in 2021.”
RDA falls to 1-4 and plays Novig this week. Glasenglitter will take on Brandgenuity.
Novig 72, Verstolo 69
In a game that ended far too late for the Chelsea Piers management to be pleased with, Novig handed Verstolo its second loss of the season.
It was the classic “first to 72 points wins” game, and Novig, despite playing without the Stern father-son duo, hit it first.
Verstolo, playing with 2-3 subs (one left at halftime), put up a valiant effort, thanks to captain Joe Schnitzer and rookie Sam Strickberger, who each scored 23 points. They deployed a zone defense against Novig for most of the game, but it was not enough to limit rookie-Josh-Wohl-sub Caleb Holzhauer, who notched a double-double (30 points, 15 rebounds).
The game was tight in the first half, but Novig began to pull away as veteran Elichai Foger’s shot heated up. Foger finished with 17 points including three three-pointers.
As newlywed Josh Wohl’s return looms near, Novig (4-1) has put themselves in a great position to make a run for the ‘ship. They take on RDA this week. Verstolo, a respectable 3-2, plays Fresh Prints.
