My name is M’Jumbe Williams I am the Commissioner and founder of the Legacy Pro AM and mentoring program. Basketball has played a major role in my development as a man. It taught me discipline and created my never quit mentality. It also has provided me with great opportunities such as me earning my BA in Physical Education from California State University of Dominquez Hills to traveling the world as a professionally basketball player. I have been able to build relationships with some brilliant men and women that help mentor me and keep me on the right path as a child into my adulthood.
I met my first mentor, Dino Smiley (commissioner of the Drew Summer Pro League) through basketball. I’ve watched him build the Drew League from a local summer rec league to a worldwide league that all basketball players at every level come to play in. This relationship with Mr. Smiley has inspired me to create my own league and mentoring program: The Legacy Pro Am and mentoring program. The Legacy Pro Am and mentoring program was created for the purpose of providing a foundation that teaches students about discipline, determination and dedication. I strongly believe that there is a need to plant seeds of positive values in our youth and by instilling these values it will prepare the youth to become the next generation of leaders that will make a great difference in their communities.
The league will also offer local high school students an opportunity to learn the different parts of how to operate a basketball league. Some of the information that students will receive is: coaching strategies, score keeping, officiating and management skills. Some of the schools that I partner with will be, Teach Tech Charter High School, Price High School and Lifeline Charter High School.
Legacy PRO AM and mentor program will attract hundreds of basketball players and spectators that will be able to come enjoy great basketball games in a family friendly environment. The league will grain exposure through social media outlets and its web pages Instagram @legacyproam & @legacyproam1. While Legacy PRO AM serves as a fun and competitive basketball league, it also helps support the community and its youth, such as a mentoring program and a free basketball clinic/ training that will take place in the fifth week of the season and on championship day.
